Thomas Logan and Elizabeth Swan were Williams parents and Morgans grandparents. The DNA ruled out the Young Thomas and Isabelle. We seem to be related to Loggans, and Loggin. Somehow the Goochland Virginia logans are genetically related. Also the Tarleton and David Manuel Logan are also part of the same family. All of the Logans in S. Carolina haven't been a match, as yet. Nor the ones in Alabama. Thomas must have split from his brothers when he is in S. Carolina. Terry

Wm Little Logan’s son, John Thomas Logan married Winifred O’Neill. Their daughter is Gladys L. who married Forrest Pugh.

Gladys was born Oct. 5, 1902, the daughter of J. Thomas and Mary O'Neill Logan at Brogan. They moved to Brogan in 1922, to Caldwell in 1935, then to Farragut, Ida. in 1942. They returned to Brogan in 1945 where they made their home. Mr. Pugh died on April 19, 1967 in Ontario.

Survivors include a son, John Pugh of Brogan; a sister, Myrtle DeChaine of Paso Robles, Calif.; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

WILLIAM L. LOGAN

WILLIAM L. LOGAN----It is with pleasure that we are enabled to give a  resume of the life of the worthy pioneer, capable gentleman, and stanch and patriotic citizen whose name initiates this paragraph, since he has wrought in many places on the frontier for it’s development, has done a lions share of the hard work to  accomplish this praiseworthy undertaking, has been exposed to the hardships of such a life, the dangers from the storms of the  mountains, the dangers from Indians on the warpath, the dangers from the wild animals in the forest, and on it all has shown that true courage, stability, and calm and good judgment that so  well became the true American citizen. Also in Malheur county Mr. Logan has wrought with a faithful hand and his works are manifest to all.

WILLIAM L. was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 31, 1821, being the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Owens) Logan. When a child he came with the family to Illinois, thence to Wisconsin, and in 1852 across the plains with ox teams to Placerville, California. En route he had to fight the Indians, and there, as many times since in such conflicts, the savage foe fell at the crack of the trusty rifle of our subject. He mines and dealt in stock in California, traveling all over the state, and Arizona and New Mexico, as well, until 1862, then pulled up from his headquarters at Marysville and Sacramento. Came north to Oregon, through the Grande Rondo valley, to Walla Walla, Lewiston, Florence, Idaho Basin to the vicinity of Weiser, where he settled and went to farming and stock raising and also kept a stage station. In  1869 he came to the lower Willow creek, where he now lives, four miles northwest from Dell, entered a homestead and settles down to improve the land and raise stock. He has added by purchase until he has three hundred acres of land, well supplied with water, and improved with good, comfortable house and all needed buildings, He raises as high as eight hundred tons of alfalfa per year and handles a large band of cattle and horses. When Mr. Logan settled here there were two other cabins, his being the third.

On April 18, 1863, Mr. Logan married Miss Nancy J. daughter of James and Lucinda (Malory) Harris. They become the parents of the following children: William Weiser, born March 13, 1864, being the first white child born in the vicinity of Weiser, Idaho.  Now married to Hattie Denham, recently deceased; John T., married to Minnie O’Neill; James N. deceased; Edward A. Married to Edna Logan; Frankie, deceased; Minnie H. deceased; Oscar W.; Arthur; Young Patrick. and David P. twins, the former deceased;  Robert L.,  Mrs.   Logan came across the plains with her parents in 1862, making the trip with ox teams from the state of Iowa. She was born in Kane county, Illinois.

Mr. Logan is a man of good capabilities, now well in the golden time of his life. Respected by all, and esteemed by those who know him and to be highly credited for the noble part that he has done in the pioneer labors of the entire west and also for the prominent work that he has accomplished in this country.

On the Idaho side of the Snake River, ten miles above Olds ferry, a stage station was established on the Auburn-Boise stage road near the mouth of the Weiser River by William L. Logan,. A short time later Jacob Weiser, William L. Logan and Thomas Gallaway started the town of Weiser. In 1868 Mr. Logan disposed of his interest there and moved to the Willow creek in Malheur County to become one of its first citizens. The Willow creek homestead on which he settled remained in the possession of the Logan family for the next seventy- seven years, until it was sold by his son, the late J. T. (Tom) Logan. The town of Weiser was platted in1877, and became the county seat of Washington county, Idaho, in1879. The first house in Weiser, a log cabin built by William L Logan, is still standing.

The first term of circuit court convened a Vale on June 27, 1887, with Judge L. B. Ison presiding and Morton D. Clifford, prosecuting attorney. The members of the first panel were: W, C. Pennington, G. W. Pierce, W. L. Logan, Joseph A. Madden, J. D. Locey, Isaac McCumsey, H. F. Norton, George  W. Brinnon, W. C. Johnson, F. B. Smith, M. Crisman, Charles Becker, J. B. McLaughlin, J. L. Yantis, J. G. Lamberson, Harry M. Plummer, John McMahon, William Shelby, Larry Faulkner, W. L. Boston, J. S. Hunter, James Lynn, A. A. Moss, Emory Cole and William Kane.

The grand jury selected from the above panal: Jason S. Hunter, foreman; W.L. Logan, Charles Becker, William Selby, M. Crisman, W. G. Pennington, and Isaac McCumsey. The grand jury returned five bills of indictment, only one of which was disposed of at this term of circuit court. The Indictment was against Marquis Stewart, charged jointly with Fred Yangen for horse stealing. Stewert pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary at Salem.

Excerpts from “The History of Washington County” 1942

Chapter 11
The first permanent settlers on the Weiser, were William and Nancy Logan, and the latter’s brother J.N. (Norm) Harris. Logan and his future wife, Nancy, were fleeing from the wrath of her parents, who were keeping a boarding house at the old town of Auburn, southwest of Baker, who were sorely opposed to a union between them as Nancy was better than a raw hand at cooking and waiting on the table. 
The young people had an entirely different notion about it and Logan secured a couple of saddle horses and a pack horse and with Nancy’s brother Norm Harris, lit out for Idaho, the nearest place they knew where they could procure the services of some one qualified to perform a marriage ceremony. 
They came by way of Burnt River and struck Snake River where the Olds ferry was later established and came on by way of where Weiser now is and I believe camped here overnight. Logan was delighted with the appearance of the country. Understanding that Olds was soon to put in a ferry on the Snake somewhere below here, he decided that here would be a good place to start a road house, as the travel would no doubt follow down this side of the river as soon as the ferry was in, instead of going along the Oregon side of the river as it had for a number of years. 
They went on to Placerville, in the Idaho basin where the Justice of the Peace was found and the wedding ceremony performed. After the wedding the 3 returned to Weiser and located at a point about two blocks south and the same distance east of where the old courthouse ruins now stand. They built a house of willows and mud and began to get ready for the entertainment of the travel that was soon to come. 
As Logan had been advised, Olds and associates put in their ferry, long known as Olds Ferry, in the fall of 1863 and began operations, under a charter granted them by the first territorial legislation at Lewiston, then the territorial capitol. Because of its antiquity, I quote the act in full, as follows:

AN ACT
To authorize Rueben Olds, Rideout and Co. to establish a ferry on Snake River in Idaho County. 
Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Idaho as follows: 
Section I. That Rueben Olds, Rideout & Co., their heirs and assigns, be, and they are hereby authorized to establish and maintain a ferry on Snake River, at a point below the mouth of Weiser River, where the said Olds, Rideout & Co., are now established and running a ferry across said river; Provided, That said ferry, when so established, which shall be within one month from the passage of this act, shall be provided with a good and sufficient boat for the accommodation of the traveling public, for wagons and animals, and also with a good skiff, and with a suitable number of hands to man said boats, and man said ferry; and Provided, the same shall be run for the accommodation of the traveling public, and shall not be vacated for the space of 30 days at any one time, then this charter to remain in force for six years from the passage of this act, otherwise to be null and void. 
Sec. 2. Said parties are to have the exclusive ferry privilege on Snake River for one mile above and one mile below the point above named for the term of years above named: Provided, That this act nor any part thereof shall be so construed as to prohibit the county commissioners from altering and fixing the rates of toll, at the expiration of three years from the passage of this act. 
Sec. 3. It shall be lawful for said parties, their heirs or assigns to collect the following rates of toll for ferrying on said ferry. For one team with wagon, $3.00; for every extra team, $1.00; for each pack animal, loaded, $75 cents; for pack animal, returning, 50 cents: for horse and rider, 75 cents; for footman, 25 cents; for loose animals, each 25 cents. 
Sec. 4. This act to take effect and be in force from and after its approval by the governor. 
Approved, January 22, 1864.

It is quite evident from the reading of the act that the ferry was to be operated for the accommodation of the traveling public, as it says so twice in the same section. 
In order that travel by teams might pass this way, it was necessary to construct a grade along the side hill between the ferry and the lower end of the valley, which is still in use by the few who have occasion to pass that way. 
Do Much Business 
As soon as the ferry was in operation and the road to the valley completed, the travel, which had been going down on the Oregon side since 1843, turned this way. The ferry business proved an immense financial success, as the operators were known to have taken in as high as fifteen hundred dollars in a single day. 
The roadhouse of the Logan’s proved to be a profitable business as their charges for accommodation were in proportion to those of the ferrymen. 
The Logan’s continued to run the business a few years when they disposed of it and took a ranch about three miles up the Weiser River. Their first two children, William and Thos. were born here in 1864 and 1865, respectively. The older one, who had been residing in California for a number of years, returned here two or three years ago, where he spent a few days visiting with relatives and returned home where he died shortly afterwards. The other son lives at Brogan, in Malheur County. After a few years residence here, the Logan’s removed to Willow Creek, in Malheur County, where they engaged in the cattle business. After the death of her husband, the old lady returned to Weiser where she lived for several years, and it was from her that I learned of their pioneer experiences here in that far away time. Her mind was as bright as to the happenings of those early days as it was the first few years after coming here. In her last days she returned to Willow Creek and died at the home of her son Thomas. These two boys were the first white children to be born in what is now Washington County. 
Chapter 12 
It will be noted from the act charging the ferry, that this part of the world was then Idaho County, the southern boundary of which extended south to a point in Snake River in latitude 44 degrees and 30 minutes, north, which is somewhere between Ontario and Nyssa. All of what is now Washington, Valley, Adams, practically all of Payette and a large part of Gem County was then within the county of Idaho, then as now, the largest county in Idaho. 
The years following the coming of the Logans. Come Woodson Jeffreys and Thomas C. Galloway, both from the Willamette Valley. Jeffreys had a family at that time of a wife, two sons and two daughters, whom he left at The Dalles because of want of school facilities here, and who joined him a few years later. Galloway was a young bachelor at that time. 
I believe his brother William, then a boy, came with him or shortly afterwards, but he was raised in his beloved Willamette Valley. he could not give it up for the wilds of Idaho, and soon returned there where he spent the remainder of his life, a much beloved and respected citizen. He was for a time register of the U.S. land office at Corvallis and for a number of terms a circuit judge, which office he held until his death. The coming of these pioneers antedated the creation of Ada County, which came into existence on the 22nd day of December, 1864, a few months after their arrival, so they were for a time residents of Idaho County, and during their residence here lived in three different counties although on the same places they had taken on their arrival here. …………………….

Hi Karl, you have on your website: Connecting the Dots: under follow up: William Renick married Ann Rodgers in 1846. "If Phoebe married a Young Thomas it would have to be after 1860."  This is not correct.

William Hamilton Renick married Ann Rodger is 1817 in Madison County Alabama (then the Mississippi Territory). He did not marry her in 1846.  Phoebe Ann Renick was born in Madison Co. Arkansas in 1818. She died in Madison County Arkansas in 1860.

William Hamilton Renick and Ann Rodgers Renick and family moved to Hardeman Co. Tennessee and just across the county Line was the household of a young man named Anthony Logan 20-29 years of age. His father was dead and not on the 1830 census, his mother was on the 1830 census as 50 to 59 years old.  A boy matching the  age of Young Thomas Logan was also on the Census.

Clearly documented in the Shelby County Tennessee marriage book:  Young T. Logan married Phoebe Ann Reynick 29 Feb 1835.  Also in the Shelby County Marriage book is Phoebe Renick's brother William H. Renick Jr. who married Young T. Logan's sister Margaret Logan 19th of March 1834.  The witness was Drury Logan. These are all brothers and sisters, Young Thomas Logan, Margaret Logan and Drury Logan.

Isabella Logan b. abt 1796-98 in York SC married Richard Ford. Kept a diary that listed brother Young Thomas Logan.  I am looking for the diary or journal that is in a Library in Houston TX.

Dr. Robert Renick Logan b. 1898 and d. 1976 was a direct descendant of Young Thomas Logan and Phoebe Ann Renick.  Dr. Logan was a professor at the University of Arkansas. He left his family history papers about Young Thomas Logan and Photos of Young Thomas Logan at the Museum of the Ozarks.

Dr. Logan knew his granddaddy who knew Young Thomas Logan. This is the best family history. Word of mouth from people who knew them. My daddy knew his granddaddy who was a little boy during the civil war.

Revolutionary Soldiers in Kentucky, by Anderson Quisenberry, List: James and John Logan of Henry County Ky both of the Virginia Line. James Logan of Hopkins Co. KY. John Logan of Trimble Co. Ky and Timothy Logan of Gerrard Co. Ky and William Logan of Nicholas Co. KY.  All of these Logans were of the Virginia Line but one of them were from the New Jersey Line.  This is a dead end. I am very surprised, I thought I would find Logans that fought in NC and SC given bounty warrants in KY.  It appears men from SC and NC were given bounty warrants which were in Tennessee.

From the book, Earliest Tennessee Land Records & Earliest TN Land History by Irene M. Griffey:  Benjamin Logan, Davidson Co. TN 640 acres 14 Jan, 1786. Hugh Logan Davidson Co. TN 26 Jun 1793. 640 acres. William Logan, 200 acres, Greene Co. TN, 27 August 1795.  I believe if they got 640 acres, it means they were an officer. Also, if they got a bounty warrant, it doesn’t mean they lived there, some men just sold off their land for cash.

I am looking into the Logan DNA Project to help find Thomas's father.

Hi Karl, I have always known the Thomas Logan who died in 1825 in Nashville is not your Thomas Logan on the 1850 census, but how do we know he did not have a son Thomas and William? I am still looking for the hand written Will of this Thomas Logan. Someone on Ancestry did post the William Little Logan that is supposed to be the son of your Thomas Logan on the 1850 Census post that this William was born in Nashville, or Davidison Co. TN. Why did they put this attached to this William Logan?  How would they know this?  So that’s my question, why would someone connected to your Thomas Logan who is on the 1850 census in Illinois claim a son William was born in Nashville?  it means your Thomas Logan on the 1850 census in Illinois was in Nashville 1821-1825 when his son William Logan was born.  I find this very, very, very hard to believe!!!!  In fact, I don’t believe it.  But you always have to ask the question, why would someone say this? Why would someone say William Logan was born in Nashville? I don’t believe it but it is interesting.

In Nashville, about 1825 a Thomas Logan married a lady (I think) Nancy Clark. I don’t believe this Thomas Logan or his children are connected to your Thomas Logan who is on the 1850 census in Illinois,  It is possible the Thomas Logan who died 1825 had a son Thomas Logan who married this Clark girl in 1825.

Most people don’t do real research, they just post what others have posted before them. For 20 years every person and every post concerning my Y.T. Logan was the son of Thomas Logan b. 1750 in Spotsylvania. I never believed it. Still don’t. Not one person in 20 years came up with a source, document or footnote. Again, they are not doing research, they are just copying what others had posted before them. I am still don’t have 100% proof as who Y. T. Logan’s daddy was. But I know he died before the 1830 census and his wife and kids ended up in Fayette County TN next to the Renick Family.

Joe Logan sounds like a real asshole. I believe all of the Logan’s of York co. SC, Mecklenburg Co. SC are related. How can 4 Logan Brothers not be related? But there were other Logans. It is fantastic that you are doing your own DNA. You are a descendant of Thomas Logan who was born about 1789 and was 61 years old on the 1850 Illinois census?  So you are a descendant of this Thomas Logan through his son William????

I had an easy start, my daddy died at 89 in Sept of 2017, he knew his grandaddy who was b. 1859. His grandaddy’s mother died during the civil war and his daddy was away fighting in Atlanta. William, my daddy’s granddaddy moved into the household of his granddaddy James Titus Renick (1804-1877).  So we knew our family line because of the Titus name and they were many deeds and court records, books and magazine artifices about Robert Renick 1710-1757 who was killed by the indians in 1757 and his family taken into captivity by the Shawnee to Ohio for 9 years.

The Thomas and Anthony Logan from York Co. SC. I believe and still believe they went to KY after the war. I think Thomas Logan in Franklin Co. Tennessee is interesting. He was there, I think from 1800 to 1830.

You are on the right track, get your DNA results and never give up searching.  I know nothin about DNA. DNA is not wrong, but I think it is possible the way people interpret the DNA results can  be wrong. I would be interested in knowing who is your Thomas Logan b. 1789 and who was his daddy.  My DNA results are coming back soon but I am really doing this for others who are linked to our family. Without DNA, I know my family line because of public documents that go back to 1718. You might want to do a newspaper search, the old newspapers back then. This is free on-line.

I am still interested in the Logan Family, I am still reading wills. I’ll let you know if I find anything.  One parting thought, people back in the old days didn’t travel point A to point B in one shot.  It is very unlikely your Thomas Logan went from South Carolina to Illinois in one step. There was no commercial fertilizer back then, they would farm a plot of ground until the soil wore out and then move on. I got the impression from the 1850 census, Thomas Logan followed his children to Illinois.  Thomas was not the head of household in 1850.

06/10/2018 Research again points to William Thomas Logan of SC.  I need to confirm DNA.  Darryl Logan declares no link for his line which follows mine. Young Thomas Logan married Phoebe Ann Renick. Daughter of William Hamilton Renick and his second wife Ann Rodgers. Young Thomas Logan had lived with his family for a while in Fayette Co. TN. Young Thomas and Phoebe married in Memphis and went to Madison County Arkansas.  Keith Renick
Follow up (Wm Renick married Ann Rodgers in 1846.  If Phoebe married a Young Thomas it would have to be after 1860.  Wm Logan had a son, Young Logan that was 2 1/2 in the 1880 census.)  KDL

Hi, I'm Darryl Logan of Alaska, My GG Grandfather was Thomas Logan (1784?) South Carolina.  My DNA tests confirms Thomas but show no link between Thomas Logan of SC and the Logans of Spotsylvania Co. (?), VA.

If I find anything different. Will let you know. There is no connection showing Thomas was ever Young Thomas. Thomas was born around 1784-89 in South Carolina. William Logan his son 1825-27 Tennessee. What Logan settled and has a son Thomas.
I knew a lady doing the Tarleton Logan line (they match DNA) Their story handed down was 6 brothers came from Scotland and split up reaching America never to see each other again. Terry Logan

Morgan was a son of Alexander. William was his uncle. He was a witness for Morgans marriage in Vale. Thomas Logan and Elizabeth Swan were Williams parents and Morgans grandparents. The DNA ruled out the Young Thomas and Isabelle. We seem to be related to Loggans, and Loggin. Somehow  the Goochland Virginia logans are genetically related. Also the Tarleton and David Manuel Logan are also part of the same family. All of the Logans in S. Carolina haven't been a match, as yet. Nor the ones in Alabama. Thomas must have split from his brothers when he is in S. Carolina.   Terry

I'll go through some more of what I've found, and see what else I can find about Thomas.  I know his father was William Thomas, and his father was William Clinch.  From there I'm still looking.  I'll find the census ('s?) or whatever that gave me backup of my information.

After Thomas Logan, I found William Thomas Logan married to Margaret Jane Black.  I remember my grandmother Laverne talking about Margaret Jane, telling my mother her middle name was from her.  Hope this helps.

Finding this site has been so informative for me! William Little Logan is my Great Grandfather, and Nancy Jane Harris my Great Grandmother.  Nancy's picture in her later years is like looking at a picture of my mother, her granddaughter, you couldn't tell them apart.
For years we've visited friends in Vale, OR, and been so close to the cemetary there where my family is, and I was never aware of it.

William Little Logan's son Arthur Walter Logan was my grandfather.   He married his second wife LaVerne May Drummond about 1928.
My mother was born January 1929. She married James Alfred Martin about 1947 or 48.
My brother James was born 1949, and I (Joette) was born 1951, and my little brother Jack was born 1953.

I found an interesting tid bit while reading the constitution.  "Corruption of Blood"

Corruption of Blood was part of ancient English penalty for treason. It was usually part of a Bill of Attainder, which normally sentenced the accused to death. The corruption of blood would forbid the accused's family from inheriting his property. Such bills and punishments were often inflicted upon Tories by colonial governments immediately following independence.

There seems to be some misdirection or misinformation regarding lineage.  I wonder whether this passage in the US constitution motivated direct descendents of the accused to alter their lineage to avoid persecution.  While Article III, section 3, outlines penalties for treason and corruption of blood, the actual consequence to descendents is uncertain.

Darryl Logan has stated that his grandfather said Thomas Logan 1784 father was Capt George Logan.   Darryl states he has not been able to prove this.  Researching Capt George Logan in that era shows a Capt George Logan dying at the Battle of Black Mingo Creek in Sept. 1780.  This can not be Thomas' father as Thomas was born between 1784-1789

Update 03.26.2010.  My recent review of research completed by Jackie Kogan and Tworobins.com suggest a lineage between Thomas Logan, 4G, and Thomas Logan Sr., 5G, and his father William Logan, 6G.  This Logan family was born in Virginia and migrated to S. Carolina.  My 4G, Thomas Logan, was born in SC and the DOB matches.  Tworobins.com and our family claim Thomas Logan, 4G, as our ancestor through research which suggests Tworobins.com additional lineage is also our lineage.

Update 03.16.2010.  Thomas Logan was born abt 1780 and married Elizabeth (Owen?) Swan whom was also born abt. 1780.  Census Records suggest that he was born in 1789.  1850 Illinois census states /Thomas was 61 in 1850.  His father has not been traced.  Ship records I have reviewed do not show any Logan’s migrating to any of the common American ports in the 1700’s.  Thomas is said to have been born in South Carolina.  Records show that most original colonists of South Carolina died during the long winters.  Records show many colonists migrating to South Carolina from Virginia and Pennsylvania.  James Logan 1674 had a brother names William.  William is a common Logan family name on our tree.  Of the nine children of Patrick Logan only James and William survived.  Looking for descendents of James and William for leads or other Logan’s that might have migrated to South Carolina.  There is good documentation of Patrick and his ancestry.  Reviewing James descendents I do not see a connection.  William, James brother, might be a clue if he can be found.

My gg-grandfather William (Lytle/Little) Logan was born in the Nashville area 1826. By 1828 the family was in IL, finally settling in Greene County where he is found in the 1850 census. Along with him are his father Thomas and brothers Alexander, Franklin, Allen (or Albert) and Wiley. Family stories say William had a wife and two children that he abandoned in IL when he went west to CA in 1852. In 1850 census he is listed as head of household, the next name is Elizabeth 18 and a baby, Mary, 2. This could be the wife and one child, but Wm also had a sister about this age named Elizabeth. Does anyone know about this family?

Hi, I'm looking for any info on Thomas Logan, b.1789 in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Swann. Their son Alexander was born in 1812 in Pendleton County. About 1820 they moved to Illinois. In 1835 they moved to Greene Co. Illinois and the family stayed there well over 100 years. Any help is appreciated.

I just got into this forum and am so thrilled to find you!
My ggggrandfather was Young Thomas Logan. Family stories say he married an Elizabeth Owens (I've also heard from another list member Swann), moved to Tennessee then to Greene County IL. Last mention of him is in the 1860 census--he was 76.

You mention a journal--?? Hope to hear from you soon!

Hi, I'm looking for any info on Thomas Logan, b. 1789 in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Swann. Their son Alexander was born in 1812 in Pendleton County. About 1820 they moved to Illinois. In 1835 they moved to Greene County IL to an area called Bluffdale Township and the town of Eldred near Carrollton. Alexander married Mary Flatt. The family stayed in Eldred for almost 100 years. Any info is a help. Thanks.

I think we're researching the same families, so I had to respond. My sole sources at this point are census data and family stories.

My Thomas Logan was also born in SC in 1789. His wife's name was Elizabeth Owens. They moved to the Nashville area where Alexander was born in 1813, Wiley in 1823 and William (my gggrandf) in 1826. They then moved to IL where Franklin was born in 1828 and Allen (or Albert) in 1834 and Elizabeth (?)1835. I'm not sure this is them, but I've seen mentioned in an Illinois history Thomas and Alexander Logan being among the first to settle in one of the southern counties (can't find my ref at the moment)and I've found a marriage license for William and Elizabeth Scott in JoDaviess county on the Minnesota border where family stories say thay also lived for awhile. The 1850 census finds them in Greene County on Nov. 14, 1850, "Between Macoupin and Apple Creeks." On one page: Entries 938 (Wiley) 939 (William) 940 (an Edward Dorsey) Then I copied the page with Alexander which begins in the middle of a Flatt family, then 922 James Flatt, 293 Alexander Logan and his wife Mary Ann (a Michael Dorsey lives with them), 924 Ransom Flatt.

My gg-grandfather William (Lytle/Little) Logan was born in the Nashville area 1826. By 1828 the family was in IL, finally settling in Greene County where he is found in the 1850 census. Along with him are his father Thomas and brothers Alexander, Franklin, Allen (or Albert) and Wiley. Family stories say William had a wife and two children that he abandoned in IL when he went west to CA in 1852. In 1850 census he is listed as head of household, the next name is Elizabeth 18 and a baby, Mary, 2. This could be the wife and one child, but Wm also had a sister about this age named Elizabeth. Does anyone know about this family?
I am searching for the parentage of my ggg-grandmother, Isobella (Elizabeth ?) LOGAN, born 1797 ? in SC. Her brother, David LOGAN, his son David LOGAN, Jr and his son's- son were land owners of some little repute in Jackson Cty., NE, AL. A great part of Jackson Cty. was named after the LOGAN family. My ggg-grandmother, Isobella and my ggg-grandfather Richard FORD, also live for a time in Jackson Cty.. Richard FORD and Isobella LOGAN were married in Warren Cty., TN in 1818. I have some suspison that Isobella's parents came for VA>?????? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I will be glad to share what I have.

ALEXANDER HOUSTON LOGAN was born Feb 3, 1831, married SARAH ELMINA BECKWITH on May 6, 1852. Sarah was pregnant with the 9th child in Rolla, MO. when Alex was killed and buried in Palestine, Crawford Co. IL July 19, 1876. I'm looking for his birthplace and his parents. Perhaps we can find this information through some child's spouse-line.

THOMAS LOGAN, a native of the Palmetto state, South Carolina, came here from Bond County, Ill., where he had been living, in 1835, and made a settlement in this township. In 1867, he left here, going to Missouri, where he died in 1869. His wife, nee Elizabeth Swann, born in South Carolina, died in Wisconsin, in 1843, of the small-pox.

With his, came his son, ALEXANDER LOGAN, who was born in 1813, in South Carolina, and who is living in this township yet. Alexander was married in this county, to Lucinda Aslott, in 1837. She died in 1841, when he was again married, in 1842, to Mary Flatt. They live in section 15.

The first permanent white settlers on the Weiser River were William and Nancy Logan, and the latter’s brother J.N. (Norm) Harris. Logan and his future wife Nancy were fleeing from the wrath of her parents, who were keeping a boarding house at the old town of Auburn, southwest of Baker. The parents were opposed to a union between them as Nancy was better than a raw hand at cooking and waiting on the table. The young people had an entirely different notion about it and Logan secured a couple of saddle horses and a pack horse and with Nancy’s brother Norm Harris, lit out for Idaho. The nearest place they knew where they could procure the services of someone to perform a marriage ceremony.

They came by way of Burnt River and struck Snake River where the Olds Ferry was later established. They camped overnight at the current location of Weiser. Logan was delighted with the appearance of the country. Understanding that Olds was soon to put in a ferry on the Snake somewhere below here, he decided that here would be a good place to start a road house, as the travel would no doubt follow down this side of the river as soon as the ferry was in, instead of going along the Oregon side of the river as it had for a number of years.

They went on to Placerville, in the Idaho basin where the Justice of the Peace was found and the wedding ceremony performed. After the wedding the three returned to Weiser, selected a site and built a house of mud and willows and began to get ready for the entertainment of the travel that was soon to come.
As Logan had been advised, Olds and associates put in their ferry, long known as Olds Ferry in the fall of 1863 and began operations, under a charter granted them by the first territorial legislature at Lewiston, the territorial capital at the time. The cost was $3.00 for the team and wagon, for the extra team, $1.00; for a loaded pack animal $ .75; for pack animal returning, $.50; for horse and rider $.75; for footman $.25; for loose animals $.25.

The ferry business proved to be financially successful as did Logan’s roadhouse. The Logan’s ran the business for a few years when they disposed of it and took a ranch about three miles sup the Weiser River. Their first two children were born in 1864 and 1865 respectively.

Do you have any informayion on them. Mary was sister to Gen Benjamin M. Logan, Hugh, Nathaniel etc. Mary was the daughter of David and Jane Logan.

Young Thomas Logan married Phoebe Ann Renick. Daughter of William Hamilton Renick and his second wife Ann Rodgers. Young Thomas Logan had lived with his family for a while in Fayette Co. TN. Young Thomas and Phoebe married in Memphis and went to Madison County Arkansas.  More info here.

I came across your site while looking for Adamses in Warren Co. KY. Wanted to let you know that the Jane Adams who married Joseph Logan was the daughter of Thomas R. G. Adams and Elizabeth Swan originally from MD. Thomas died after 1810 in Warren.
